ASD Suction Point With Manometer Vacuum Gauge
An existing customer with a Bubble Up Jr aeration system in place for waterborne radon removal discovered they have bacteria and elevated uranium concentrations in their water supply. We installed a Clack WS1 anion exchange system to remove the uranium, and a Viqua VH410 Ultra Violet sterilization system to sterilize the water. We also did some re-piping to clean up the homeowners well system layout.
Active Soil Depressurization (ASD) or Sub Slab Depressurization (SSD) can also workin concert with a waterproofing system. Sump suction, or sub slab sump suction can be very effective in lowering airborne radon concentrations provided that the water level under the slab isn't above the lateral pipe network under the slab.
An interior footing drain system consists of perforaed pipe in a bed of gravel that runs along the footing inside the basement footprint. It typically dumps into a sump basin where the sump pump is located. This perforated pipe and gravel channel can help move a lot of air out from under the slab when we tap our suction point near it. Tapping into the actual sump is not necessary.
Cambridge Aeration System install.
Customer had 24,000 pCi/l of radon in their well water. We installed a Cambridge aeration system capable of up to 99% of waterborne radon removal. The install included pre and post clear "big blue" filters to ensure high flow and minimize pressure loss. Post sediment filters are not always installed with aeration systems. But the water supply in this house had some iron in it. The owner didn't want a softener or iron filter, so we installed the post filter to capture any iron that might get oxidized in the aeration process.

This home had a heavy bed of gravel and sub slab pipe which required the use of 4" PVC and a high volume radon mitigation fan. Because of the porous gravel bed under the slab, one suction point was all that was needed to successfully establish a negative sub slab pressure field.
